Questions to bring to a planned C-section visit

A calm checklist of topics to discuss with your birth team before a planned cesarean birth.

A planned cesarean birth can bring practical questions as well as feelings. Your own clinician and hospital can explain which options fit your medical situation and local policies.

How will we communicate?

Ask who will talk you through each step, how questions can be raised during surgery, and what information your support person can expect.

Who can be there?

Ask whether your support person can be present, what their role may be, and what happens if circumstances change. ACOG’s sample birth plan includes space to name a support person for a cesarean delivery.

What happens after birth?

Discuss the recovery room, holding your baby, feeding plans, pain control, discharge instructions, and help you may need at home. ACOG notes that recovery needs vary and advises discussing options with your obstetrician.
